Signs Your Compressor Is Failing

The compressor is the pump at the heart of every fridge and freezer, and it is the single most expensive part to replace. Knowing the warning signs helps you act early and make an informed repair-or-replace decision.

The warning signs

• The fridge runs constantly but never gets properly cold.
• Rapid clicking every few minutes as the start relay tries and fails.
• A noticeable increase in humming or a new knocking sound.
• The compressor feeling extremely hot to the touch.
• The unit tripping the power when it tries to start.

Compressor fault or relay fault?

Good news: many symptoms blamed on a dead compressor are actually a failed start relay or capacitor — far cheaper to replace. Only a technician’s test can tell whether the compressor itself has failed or simply cannot start.

Repair or replace?
