Water Dispenser Not Cooling? Troubleshooting

A water dispenser that pours warm water has a few likely causes. Here’s how to troubleshoot before calling a technician.

Hot-and-cold water dispensers are a fixture in Kenyan homes and offices, so warm water from the cold tap is a common complaint. A little troubleshooting narrows down the cause.

The likely causes

  • A failed compressor or cooling system — the equivalent of a fridge that stops cooling.
  • A faulty thermostat that no longer triggers cooling.
  • Poor ventilation around the back, so the unit cannot shed heat.
  • A refrigerant issue in the sealed cooling circuit.

What you can check yourself

  • Make sure the cooling switch at the back is turned on — it is often knocked off by accident.
  • Pull the unit a few centimetres from the wall so air can circulate around the coils.
  • Give it a few hours after refilling or moving before judging the temperature.

When to call a technician

If the switch is on, the unit is ventilated, and water is still warm after several hours, the fault is likely in the compressor, thermostat or sealed system. These need a technician — the same refrigeration skills used to repair a fridge.

Keeping it running well

Clean the drip tray and sanitise the tanks periodically, keep the back clear of dust, and use a surge protector to shield the compressor from power spikes.

Frequently asked

Common causes are the cooling switch being off, poor ventilation, or a compressor or thermostat fault. Check the switch and airflow first, then call a technician.
